Passport cleanliness leads to $1,000 charge in Bali

A Melbourne woman traveling to Bali was allegedly conned out of $1,000 by airport staff who accused her of breaking the law due to her slightly dirty passport. After being questioned for over an hour, she was told she could resolve the issue by paying the fee. When she refused, the staff targeted her senior mother and convinced her to pay. The incident dampened their holiday experience, and upon returning home, the woman reported the ordeal to Australian border security, who suggested she had been set up. The Department of Foreign Affairs advises that normal wear and tear to a passport should not be an issue for travel.
