Denmark's Queen Margrethe II, the longest-serving monarch in Europe, has announced her abdication after 52 years on the throne. She will be succeeded by her son, Crown Prince Frederik, on January 14, 2024. The announcement was made during her New Year's Eve speech. The queen's decision comes after a period of reflection following her back surgery in February. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed the nation's deep appreciation for the queen's dedication and representation of Danish identity.
