Remembering Palestinian Poet Refaat Alareer: A Life Cut Short by Israeli Forces

Palestinian poet Refaat Alareer, known for writing in English to tell the stories of Gaza, was killed in a strike on Gaza. Alareer had vowed to "throw (his) pen in the soldiers' faces" if his house was stormed. Tributes poured in for the poet, who documented daily life under Israeli bombardment and was a professor of English literature at the Islamic University of Gaza. Alareer caused controversy with his remarks about Israel and Hamas, but was also praised for his work in the "We are not numbers" project.
