A Ukrainian medic’s captivity and a family split by the war

Liliia Prutian, a Ukrainian medic from Donbas who served with the Aidar Battalion, was captured by Russian troops, raped in custody, and briefly tried for terrorism in Russia before a prisoner swap returned her to Ukraine; her three sons ended up on opposite sides—one in Ukraine’s forces, one in the Russian army, and the youngest left in occupied territory—before she finally reunited with him after a perilous escape through Russia, Belarus and Poland.
