Shadow policing scandal: UK immigration officer convicted of aiding Chinese intelligence

A UK immigration officer, Chi Leung 'Peter' Wai, and two men were found guilty under the National Security Act of assisting a foreign intelligence service and Wai of misconduct in public office for running a covert operation to monitor Hong Kong dissidents in Britain. Wai used his access to the Home Office Atlas database to track dissidents on days off, coordinating with Chung Biu 'Bill' Yuen of HKETO, with another officer Trickett also involved. The operation targeted activists such as Nathan Law and Finn Lau, and included a controversial plan to locate Monica Kwong in Pontefract that ended with a failed break-in; the jury could not rule on whether that act amounted to foreign interference. Trickett later died by suicide; the prosecution said it would not seek a retrial on the undecided charges.
