Australia seized more than 100,000 illegal Madagascar hissing and dubia cockroaches from a Bathurst breeder in the country’s largest-ever exotic invertebrate seizure, worth about A$200,000; the species are illegal to import or keep, and the cockroaches will be euthanized. No charges were laid against the breeder, but officials warned of prosecutions for others and urged reptile owners to use crickets or wood roaches instead.

San Jose Police Union Director Charged with Fentanyl Importation

The executive director of the San Jose Police Officers’ Association, Joanne Marian Segovia, has been charged with attempting to illegally import a controlled substance, including fentanyl, and agreeing to distribute them in the United States. Segovia used her personal and office computers to order the drugs between October 2015 and January 2023. At least 61 shipments were mailed to her home from countries including Hong Kong, Hungary, and India. She is charged with an attempt to unlawfully import valeryl fentanyl and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
