Two-Level Temporary BQE Detour Planned Over Furman Street to Rebuild Crumbling Brooklyn-Queens Expressway

New York City plans a temporary, two-level cantilever above Furman Street to bypass a half-mile, crumbling stretch of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway beneath the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. The project, expected to last about a decade from 2030 to 2040 and cost up to $4 billion (funding details not federal), would close portions of the promenade but keep at least one section open and aims to shield about 130,000 daily vehicles from disruption by diverting them onto the new roadway. An environmental impact statement will begin next year, with land reviews completed by 2028, and the temporary route would be removed once the BQE is rebuilt by 2040.
