Rising pediatric deaths in Illinois linked to invasive Group A strep
Cases of invasive Strep A have been on the rise in some areas of the US, with preliminary data from 2023 suggesting that cases have remained elevated above pre-pandemic levels. Invasive Strep A is a rare but dangerous disease that can cause severe infections like streptococcal toxic shock syndrome or necrotizing fasciitis. The condition is usually treated in the hospital with IV antibiotics and other supportive measures. To lessen the risk of exposure, practicing good hygiene like washing hands, surfaces, and plates or glasses can keep it from spreading. Parents and caregivers should also make sure children are up to date on flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.
