Florida Executes Duane Owen for 1984 Murder of Babysitter and Mother
Duane Owen was executed in Florida for the murders of Karen Slattery and Georgianna Worden. Owen was found guilty of raping and stabbing Slattery, a 14-year-old babysitter, and raping and bludgeoning Worden, a 38-year-old executive secretary and single mother of two. Owen's last meal was a bacon cheeseburger without a bun, onion rings, strawberries, a vanilla milkshake, and coffee. His attorneys argued that he was mentally incompetent, but the state Supreme Court rejected that argument. Florida is one of 24 states where the death penalty remains in place.
