Accused Michigan kidnapper dies before trial for teen's murder
Gerald Bennett, a man awaiting trial for his alleged involvement in the 2018 abduction and murder of 16-year-old Mujey Dumbuya, has died in a Lansing hospital. Bennett, who was facing charges including kidnapping and conspiracy to commit murder for hire resulting in death, had been accused of assisting Quinn James in the crime. James, a former maintenance worker at Kentwood Public Schools, was found guilty of first-degree murder in 2019 and is currently serving a life sentence. Bennett had been found incompetent to stand trial by a judge but was later arrested on federal charges. He was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and passed away while on a ventilator.
