Ed Boon hints at Mortal Kombat's future with nods to past titles.
Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, shared on Twitter that Kumite was one of the early working project titles for the original game before settling on Mortal Kombat. Boon had previously mentioned Kumite as a potential title in a 2016 interview. The Mortal Kombat series is now one of the most iconic in video games, and a 12th mainline game is expected to be announced this year.
