Denver's Efforts to Address Homelessness Face Challenges and Pushback

Denver plans to close seven more homeless encampments by the end of the year as part of its goal to house 1,000 people. The city aims to provide indoor shelter through converted hotel units, micro-communities, or leased units, offering services such as healthcare, substance use care, and workforce training. So far, 584 people have been sheltered through various means. Additionally, three micro-community sites are under construction, with one expected to open by December 31 and the others in early 2022. The mayor's office emphasizes that the goal is not just to close camps but to provide safety, stability, and hope for those experiencing homelessness.
