Nusrat Jahan Choudhury makes history as first Muslim woman federal judge in US
Nusrat Choudhury has become the first Muslim woman and the first Bangladeshi American to be confirmed as a federal judge by the US Senate. Choudhury, a civil rights attorney, will join the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Her confirmation highlights the lack of diversity among federal judges, by race and ethnicity, and gender. Choudhury's work includes challenging discriminatory practices in police reform, which prompted Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin to join Republicans in opposing her nomination.
