Newsrooms sue OpenAI and Microsoft over AI training data copyright
The Seattle Times and Newsday filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging their journalism was used as training data for AI models without permission and that the chatbots frequently reproduce passages from their reporting in response to user prompts; they seek destruction of copies, training data, and AI models incorporating their work, and Microsoft is named because Copilot is built on OpenAI’s tech, joining nearly 400 local newspapers in similar suits.
