Senate confirms Nusrat Chowdhury as first Muslim female federal judge in US history.
Nusrat Choudhury, a civil rights lawyer, has been confirmed by the Senate as a federal judge in New York, making her the first female Muslim American and first Bangladeshi American to hold that distinction in U.S. history. Her confirmation comes as the Biden administration and Senate Democrats work to fill the federal judiciary’s many vacancies, prioritizing people of color and those coming from nontraditional backgrounds. Judge Choudhury now begins a lifetime appointment on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, which encompasses Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island.
