Search suspended after Newport plane crash leaves pilot missing
A Beechcraft B95 crashed into the Pacific about a mile west of Nye Beach near Newport, Oregon, leaving the 78-year-old pilot missing. Eyewitness Yoshio Abe described the plane flying unusually low before it went down. The U.S. Coast Guard conducted a daylong search with a helicopter and rescue boats, but the operation was suspended around 11 p.m. after covering roughly 124 square miles as darkness fell; the FAA will investigate, and the pilot’s identity has not yet been released.
