Belleville Synagogue Shooting Leaves Officer Critical, Suspect Ward in Life-Threatening Condition
A police officer and a suspect were wounded in a shootout outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, during Yom Kippur services. The suspect, identified as Sean Ward, is in life-threatening condition, while Const. Jeff Smith remains in critical but stable condition. Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the incident, which occurred after a routine police presence was requested by the synagogue. No motive has been confirmed, though officials suggest the timing implies an antisemitic attack.
