John Mellencamp's latest album, Orpheus Descending, tackles heavy subjects such as America's relationship with guns and the suffering of the unhoused, but also offers glimpses of hope and perseverance. The music, featuring ace fiddle player Lisa Germano, sometimes kicks up a heel and Mellencamp promises to do better with what time he has left on the album-closing "Backbone."
