New Orleans Catholic Churches Face Closure and Consolidation, Parishioners React
The Archdiocese of New Orleans is closing and merging thirteen Catholic church parishes due to economic challenges, including $100 million in sex abuse settlements. The closures and mergers will take effect on July 1 and were chosen based on predominantly aging and low- or moderate-income populations. The Archdiocese filed for bankruptcy in 2020 due to an increase in sexual abuse claims. The affected parishes will receive new names except for one, and two parishes initially on the closure list will remain open for now due to progress in addressing their challenges. Ongoing reviews will ensure sustainability of progress.
