Patrick McCaughey III, who used a stolen riot shield to crush a police officer in a doorframe during the US Capitol insurrection, has been sentenced to seven years and six months in prison followed by two years of supervised release. McCaughey expressed shame for joining the mob of then-President Donald Trump’s supporters who “violated” the Capitol. McCaughey’s 90-month sentence matches the second longest prison sentence so far for a Capitol riot defendant. Nine people, including McCaughey, were charged together with joining one of the most brutal clashes at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

Prosecutors are seeking a nearly 16-year prison sentence for Patrick McCaughey, a Jan. 6 defendant who pinned a police officer in a Capitol doorway amid some of the most chaotic moments of violence that day.
