Pilot's Drug Use Blamed for Fatal Hot Air Balloon Crash
An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has found that the use of cannabis and cocaine by hot air balloon pilot Nicholas Meleski contributed to New Mexico's deadliest balloon crash, which killed Meleski and four passengers. The NTSB concluded that Meleski failed to maintain adequate clearance from power lines while maneuvering for a landing. The report stated that the pilot's use of impairing drugs likely affected his ability to operate the balloon successfully. The crash occurred when the balloon hit a power line, severing the gondola from the envelope. The NTSB found no evidence of mechanical malfunctions.
