Governor Walz Enacts Comprehensive Gun Control Measures.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed a public safety and judiciary budget bill that includes two new restrictions on firearm possession and sales. The bill creates red flag protections to remove firearms from those deemed a danger to themselves or others and expands criminal background checks to private transfers of firearms. The law also includes provisions to boost funding for Minnesota courts, expand youth intervention and restorative programs, limit the use of no-knock search warrants by police, and create the first Office of Missing and Murdered African American Women and Girls in the nation. Gun rights advocates opposed the measures, while police chiefs, public health officials, mental health groups, and survivors of gun violence urged their passage.
