Predicting the AI future through machine learning in a growing knowledge network
Researchers have developed a data-driven approach to predict future research directions in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) by modeling the evolution of AI literature as a temporal network. Using an evolving semantic network that encapsulates the content and development of AI research since 1994, they applied ten statistical and machine learning methods to accurately predict which combinations of concepts AI researchers will investigate in the future. The study highlights the potential for AI-driven research suggestions, improving productivity, and driving progress in the field. Future work includes fully automated concept extraction, leveraging ontology taxonomies, incorporating relation extraction, generating new concepts, and predicting scientific success.
