10-year-old girl survives 24 hours alone in rugged wilderness
A 10-year-old girl, Shunghla Mashwani, survived more than 24 hours alone in the rugged Cascade mountains after getting lost while out with her family. The family, who arrived in the US two years ago from Afghanistan, were at a gathering in the Cle Elum River Valley when Shunghla became separated from the group. Rescuers praised her resourcefulness and resilience as she hiked downstream through the dense forest and spent the cold night between some trees. She was found by two ground search volunteers and only had minor scrapes.
