Wayne Woodbury, 76, Searsmont’s assistant fire chief, died at Maine Medical Center from injuries sustained in the May 15 Robbins Lumber sawmill explosion, after he and other responders fought the blaze.
Florence Hardwoods, a sawmill operator in Wisconsin, has agreed to pay a fine of $190,696 for the death of a 16-year-old worker who was pinned by machinery. The U.S. Department of Labor found that the company had employed underage workers to operate hazardous machinery, in violation of federal child labor regulations. In addition to the fatality, three other children were injured at the sawmill. Florence Hardwoods has entered a court agreement to comply with child labor regulations and will no longer hire workers under the age of 16.
