Canadian Ex-Intelligence Chief Convicted for Leaking State Secrets

Cameron Ortis, the former head of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police intelligence unit, has been found guilty of leaking state secrets, marking the first conviction under Canada's Security of Information Act. Ortis was convicted of three counts of violating the act, one count of attempted violation, breach of trust, and fraudulent use of a computer. He had allegedly revealed classified information to three individuals in 2015 and attempted to do so in another instance. Ortis claimed he was working to protect the country from a grave threat and offered secret material as bait to entice targets to use an online encryption service. The sentencing hearing will take place in early January.
