Crypto 'Bonnie and Clyde' Plead Guilty in Separate Hearings
Ilya Lichtenstein and his wife Heather Morgan, known as cryptocurrency's "Bonnie and Clyde," pleaded guilty to charges of money laundering conspiracy in connection with the 2016 theft of $71 million in bitcoin from the Bitfinex exchange. Lichtenstein admitted to being behind the hack, but under the plea deal, he is unlikely to face additional charges. The couple attempted to launder only a fraction of the stolen funds, some of which was used to buy gold coins buried in California. The Justice Department's recovery of $3.6 billion from the couple was the largest seizure of funds in its history. Morgan, who rapped under the name "Razzlekhan" and wrote for business publications, faces up to five years in prison on each of the two charges, while Lichtenstein faces a maximum sentence of 20 years.
