Supreme Court Upholds Illinois Semiautomatic Weapons Ban

The Supreme Court has denied a request to block an Illinois law banning high-powered semiautomatic weapons, allowing the ban to remain in place. The law, signed by Governor J.B. Pritzker, includes penalties for possession, sale, and manufacture of assault weapons and .50 caliber rifles. It also covers attachments and cartridges, as well as kits or tools to increase the fire rate of semiautomatic weapons. The law will stay in effect while it is litigated in lower courts, and individuals who previously owned banned guns can keep them if registered with the state before January 1, 2024.
