Shammas Malik emerges victorious in Akron mayoral race.
Shammas Malik, a first-term Akron City Councilman, won the Democratic primary to become the next mayor of Akron with 43.2% of the votes. He is virtually assured to become the youngest person and the first person of color to serve as the mayor of Akron. No independents filed to run this year and the only Republican, Jim Isabella, failed to collect enough valid signatures. Malik's victory speech emphasized that "change is coming."
