"UAW Strikes and Biden's Powerful Gesture: Impact on Auto Parts Suppliers"

The ongoing United Auto Workers (UAW) strike against major automakers Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis is starting to impact smaller auto parts suppliers, many of which are still recovering from the effects of the pandemic and semiconductor shortage. These smaller suppliers, which employ an estimated 871,000 workers, may struggle to survive a prolonged strike or even go out of business. Some are already facing financial difficulties, with about 30% in poor shape and another 21% struggling. The Motor and Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) has requested aid from the White House to support these suppliers, including low-interest loans to help them meet payroll. Layoffs have already begun, and if the strike continues, there is a risk that laid-off workers may find other jobs and not return once the strike is resolved. Larger publicly traded suppliers like Lear Corporation, Dana, Magna International, and Adient are also expected to be affected if the strike persists.
