"Facebook and Instagram Under Fire for Hosting Sexually Exploitative Parents"

Reports from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal reveal that Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is knowingly allowing parents to sexually exploit their children for financial gain on the platforms, with some using paid subscription tools to do so. Investigations found that some parents were catering content of their children to pedophiles, engaging in sexually charged conversations about their own children, and making them interact with sexual messages sent by subscribers. Despite recommendations to address the issue, Meta focused on building an unreliable automated system to prevent likely pedophiles from subscribing to parent-run accounts. The company's moderation tools also restricted parents who blocked too many accounts from blocking suspected predators, and Meta's inadequate moderation attempts have been highlighted. This comes amid existing accusations of creating a "marketplace for predators in search of children," and a lawsuit raised by the New Mexico attorney general.
