Mangione murder case stalls as double-jeopardy questions loom
A New York state murder trial for Luigi Mangione was effectively postponed after Judge Gregory Carro ordered prosecutors to respond by Oct. 9 to Mangione’s motion to dismiss the case on double-jeopardy and constitutional grounds, with a Dec. 10 hearing set. Mangione had pleaded guilty to two federal stalking counts and admitted to fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson; if federal sentencing resolves the double-jeopardy issue, state charges could be dismissed, but the Manhattan DA’s office says it will continue to litigate the question and pursue justice for Thompson’s family. The federal guilty plea occurred less than a month before jury selection in the state trial was slated to begin.
