Surat Court Dismisses Rahul Gandhi's Appeal for Stay on Defamation Conviction.

The Surat district and sessions court dismissed Rahul Gandhi's appeal for staying his conviction in the criminal defamation case, stating that his counsel failed to prove that "irreversible and irrevocable damage would be caused to the appellant (Gandhi)" if the conviction was not stayed. The court disagreed with the objections raised by Gandhi's counsel to the maintainability of BJP MLA Purnesh Modi's complaint, stating that the "derogatory" remarks "certainly harmed his (Purnesh Modi's) reputation" and caused him "pain and agony".

Congress Leader Threatens Judge with Tongue-Cutting Over Rahul Gandhi Conviction

A Tamil Nadu Congress leader has threatened to "cut off the tongue" of the judge who convicted Rahul Gandhi of defamatory speech. Rahul Gandhi was convicted by a Gujarat court on March 23 and subsequently disqualified as a Member of Parliament. The Congress has been staging protests across the country and has received support from several Opposition parties. Rahul has refused to apologise for his comments and opted to fight the ruling via judicial means.

Rahul Gandhi's Legal Battles and Political Turmoil.

Rahul Gandhi has filed an appeal in a Surat sessions court against his conviction and two-year jail term in a 2019 defamation case over his "Modi surname" remark. He claimed that he was treated harshly by the trial court and sentenced in a manner so as to attract disqualification as an MP. Gandhi was granted bail till the disposal of his appeal on a bond of Rs 15,000. The former Congress president was disqualified as a Lok Sabha member under provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, after his conviction.
