Accelerating Progress on the SDGs: Challenges and Collaborations
Scientists appointed by the United Nations have warned that the world is not on track to achieve any of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. At the current rate of progress, extreme poverty, hunger, and lack of education will persist, and gender equality will take 300 years to achieve. To accelerate progress, scientists recommend removing roadblocks, identifying transformation pathways, and improving governance. Governments need to play a more active role in stimulating innovation, shaping markets, and regulating business. Tailored approaches are needed to overcome obstacles in different sectors and countries. Researchers should provide evidence on rapid changes in technologies, policies, and behaviors. Feasible and cost-effective pathways should be identified, considering trade-offs and synergies between the SDGs. Strengthening governance processes and enhancing accountability are crucial for achieving the SDGs.
