Austin Police Officer Indicted for Excessive Force and Assault
Austin police officer Alejandro Gaitan has been indicted on one felony and two misdemeanors for using excessive force while trying to arrest a person with an outstanding warrant in March 2021. Gaitan has been charged with aggravated assault by a public servant and two counts of official oppression. Two other officers connected with the incident received 90-day suspensions after they failed to intervene. The case will be prosecuted by the Travis County District Attorney's Office's Civil Rights Unit.
