Immigration-advocating El Salvador-born priest tapped to lead West Virginia diocese
Pope Leo XIV appointed Evelio Menjivar-Ayala, an El Salvador-born immigrant advocate and Washington, D.C. auxiliary bishop, as the new bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, West Virginia. A former refugee who gained humanitarian protection and citizenship, he has opposed Trump’s immigration crackdown and stressed listening to the poor and immigrant communities; he will be installed July 2, replacing Bishop Mark Brennan in a largely white, rural state.
