"Brazil's Innovative Approach to Combat Dengue Fever Outbreak"
Brazil is set to release millions of bacteria-infected mosquitoes in six cities to combat a severe outbreak of dengue fever, which has seen 1.6 million probable cases and 491 deaths so far this year. The Wolbachia method, which limits the transmission of dengue and other arboviruses, has already been successful in five Brazilian cities and will now be expanded to cover a further 1.7 million people. The low-cost and proven efficacy of this method has led to high demand from city authorities, with plans to increase production capacity to protect around 70 million Brazilians within 10 years.
