"Unlocking Creativity: Therapeutic Writing as Artistic Expression Behind Bars"

Nate Johnson, a former prosecutor, teaches a writing workshop in jails in Minnesota as a therapeutic intervention for inmates. Using a technique called free writing, inmates are prompted to write furiously for five minutes without interruption, allowing them to express their thoughts and emotions. The workshops have revealed a pool of literary talent among inmates, with compositions touching on topics such as racism, crime, poverty, and privilege. Johnson's nonprofit organization, FreeWriters, aims to help inmates overcome trauma and turn their lives around through writing. The workshops have built camaraderie among inmates and provided a form of therapy that is often lacking in the criminal justice system.
