CDC Reports Significant Drop in New HIV Infections in the US
New HIV infections in the US have decreased by 12% since 2017, with a 34% decrease among gay and bisexual men aged 13 to 24, according to a report by the CDC. However, Black and Hispanic people still represent a disproportionate share of new HIV infections, and relatively few prescriptions for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) were given to these groups in 2021. The CDC estimates that about 1.2 million people in the US have HIV, but about 1 in 8 don’t know they have it. Efforts must be accelerated and strengthened for progress to reach all groups faster and equitably.
