"Ship Collision Kills Endangered North Atlantic Right Whale off Virginia, Sparks Calls for Stricter Ship Speed Rules"

The whale, a mother who gave birth to her sixth calf this season, had catastrophic injuries consistent with a vessel strike. Environmental groups have called for tighter regulations on commercial fishing and shipping to protect the vulnerable species, as human impacts continue to threaten their survival.

"World's Oldest Giraffe in Captivity, Twiga, Dies at Texas Zoo"

Twiga, a 31-year-old Masai giraffe, has died at Texas' Ellen Trout Zoo, making her one of the world's oldest living giraffes in captivity. The species is considered endangered, with just 35,000 mature individuals estimated to be remaining in the wild. Twiga's age was unusual for the species, as Masai giraffes generally only live to be about 25 years old. The decline in the population is attributed to habitat loss and illegal hunting.
