The closure of a coal processing plant in Pittsburgh, US, in 2016 resulted in significant improvements in air quality and subsequent health benefits for the local communities. The closure led to a 90% decrease in sulphur dioxide, a 66% decrease in arsenic, and improved particle pollution. Emergency room visits for heart problems decreased by 42%, and similar improvements were seen in stroke cases. Testimonies from the community highlighted the negative impact of air pollution on their health. The study confirms that fossil fuel-related air pollution is more toxic than other types, emphasizing the need to phase out fossil fuel processing and combustion for better human health. Other studies also show the positive impact of reducing air pollution on respiratory and cardiovascular health.
