Germany’s Former BND Chief Arrested in Major Espionage Scandal

August Hanning, the former head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND), has been arrested on suspicion of treason and espionage. Prosecutors allege he acquired approximately 2,000 classified documents from a former aide, Manfred D, and used them to draft analyses for foreign intelligence services. The case, which emerged from an unrelated custody dispute investigation, is described by some as Germany’s biggest espionage scandal of the century. Hanning faces potential life imprisonment if convicted.
