Monmouth Meat Plant Workers Walk Out After Fatal Machine Accident

Dozens of employees at a Smithfield Foods meat processing plant in Monmouth, Illinois, walked off the job on Monday after a colleague died in a machine-related incident. Workers reported that management initially ordered production to continue despite the fatality, leading to a plant-wide walkout estimated at 100 people. Smithfield Foods later stated that employees were given the option to leave without penalty, though the company confirmed the death and acknowledged the difficult circumstances. The incident marks the fourth death at the facility this year, with the first three attributed to health issues and this latest one to a machine. OSHA and local authorities are currently investigating the cause of the death.
