17 States Demand Recall of Theft-Prone Hyundai and Kia Vehicles

Attorneys general from 18 states, including Maryland and D.C., are urging the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to order a recall of Hyundai and Kia vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2022 due to their easily-bypassed ignition switches and vulnerability to being stolen. The carmakers have been handing out free steering wheel locks and announced plans to roll out software updates, but the state officials say the measures don't go far enough. The letter states that the thefts have led to at least eight deaths, numerous injuries, and property damage, and have diverted significant police and emergency services resources from other priorities.
