Calls for Recall of Kia and Hyundai Models Increase Amidst Thefts and Safety Concerns

The New Mexico Attorney General's office has joined 17 other Attorneys General in demanding a recall of certain Hyundai and Kia models due to a social media trend that led to thousands of car thefts across the country, including 30 in Las Cruces between January and March. The cars lack engine immobilizers, a standard feature on most cars that prevents the engine from starting unless the key is present. The trend inspired 14 crashes and eight deaths. Both car companies say they are addressing the concerns, but Kia says a recall is neither appropriate nor necessary under federal law.
