The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed a new regulation that would require automakers to equip vehicles with seat belt warning systems for both front and rear passengers. The proposal aims to establish consistency and increase seat belt usage for all occupants. The requirements include visual and audible warnings for rear seats upon vehicle start, as well as audiovisual warnings for front seats until seat belts are secured. The NHTSA estimates that these requirements could prevent over 100 deaths and 300 nonfatal injuries annually. The proposal has been welcomed by the industry and is expected to take effect in the coming years.
