Study Reveals Hidden Penalty of Remote Work for Young Professionals.

A new study from economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the University of Iowa, and Harvard has found that remote work may be causing a hidden professional penalty for young professionals, particularly women and people of color, who lack the professional networks that being in the office can help provide. The study found that remote work reduced the amount of feedback that junior engineers received, and some of the junior engineers were more likely to quit the firm. The authors suggest that the office plays an important role in early-career development, and the mentorship and training people get in person had so far proved hard to replicate on Slack and Zoom.
