British American Tobacco fined over $600 million for violating North Korea sanctions.

British American Tobacco's subsidiary, BAT Marketing Singapore, has been fined $629 million by the DOJ and $508 million in a civil settlement by the State Department for selling tobacco products to North Korea from 2007 to 2017, despite sanctions against the transactions. The profits from the scheme are believed to have flowed back to the North Korean government and its military. The criminal fine is the largest in Justice Department history for a sanctions violation. Three individuals were also charged in a similar scheme.
