The NSA's cybersecurity director, Rob Joyce, warned that hackers and propagandists are using generative AI chatbots to improve their English and make phishing schemes and propaganda campaigns more convincing to native English speakers. These chatbots, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard, are being used by cybercriminals and foreign intelligence agencies to generate better English-language outreach, making malicious online activity more convincing. While AI is also becoming a helpful defensive cybersecurity tool, the NSA has established an AI Security Center to promote the secure adoption of new AI capabilities across the national security enterprise and the defense industrial base.
