Renewable energy has surpassed coal in the United States for the first time in 2022, with wind and solar contributing 14% of the electricity produced domestically. The growth in renewables was largely driven by economics, with the levelized cost of wind energy declining by 70% and solar power declining by 90% over the past decade. However, the country remains heavily reliant on fossil fuels, with natural gas being the largest source of electricity in the US. Battery storage, long-distance transmission, and other steps will be needed to address the challenges of intermittency as the proportion of renewables that supply the energy grid increases.
